DELIRIUMS CLOSET

Poor Delirium. Sometimes she doesn't know if she's coming or going. In fact, she's been known to forget that on occasion. She could not be described as the most stable member of the family. However, if you can get past the fact that her attention span is no more than five seconds, she is an adorable girl. Delirium appears as a teenage girl, dressed in clashing colors, multicolored hair (which changes by the minute), and a lost look in her mismatched eyes.

Deliruim was not always this way, however. Long ago, she was Delight. But, all things change, and unfortunately for poor Delight, this change was not neccessarily for the better. It has been shown, however, that when absolutely neccessary, she can pull herself together and can be a very decisive, domineering, "take-charge" kind of girl. It doesn't happen often, so when it does, it generally surprises those who know her.

From The Sandman 21, by Neil Gaiman & Mike Dringenberg.

Delirium is the youngest of the endless. She smells of sweat, sour wines, late nights, old leather. Her realm is close, and can be visited; however, human minds were not made to comprehend her domain, and those few who have made the journey have been incapable of reporting back more than a few fragments.

The poet Coleridge claimed to have known her intimately, but the man was an inveterate liar, and in this, as in so much, we must doubt his word. Her appearance is the most variable of all the Endless, who at best, are ideas cloaked in the semblance of flesh. Her shadow's shape and outline has no relationship to that of any body she wears, and it is tangible, like old velvet.

Some say the tragedy of Delirium is her knowledge that, despite being older than suns, older than gods, she is forever the youngest of the Endless, who do not measure time as we measure time, or see the worlds through mortal eyes. Others deny this, and say that Delirium has no tragedy, but here they speak without reflection. For Delirium was once Delight. And although that was long ago now, even today her eyes are badly matched: one eye is a vivid emerald green, spattered with silver flecks that move; her other eye is vein blue.
"Who knows what Delirium sees, through her mismatched eyes?"

This is a few pictures of her as delight..

THIS WEEKS QUOTE

Is there a word for forgetting the name of someone when you want to introduce them to someone else at the same time you realize you've  forgotten the name of the person you're introducing them to as well?

BRIEF HISTORY

Delirium is the youngest member of The Endless, a "family" of metaphysical entities who represent various archetypal aspects of the universe itself. (For a complete description of The Endless, see Dream's profile.) Once known as Delight, her transformation into Delirium was instigated by a fundamental shift in the nature of humanity occurring millennia ago. Perpetually confused, her mind jumps randomly from one thought to another and maintaining coherent speech proves to be not only a difficult task for her, but a literally painful one. She was the favorite sibling of Destruction, another of The Endless, before he resigned his "position," vowing never to return. He did, however, bestow Barnabas, a talking dog of incisive wit, upon her before he left in order that she may be well looked after. The relationship she maintains with the other members of The Endless is essentially that of a happy-go-lucky child to a preoccupied adult. Her association with Desire represents an exception to this rule, however, because the elder sibling is not above manipulating Delirium for use in his/her machinations against their brother, Dream. One of Delirium's eyes is green while the other is blue, and her wild, punky appearance fluctuates from moment to moment depending upon her mood and current object of attention. As Destruction has pointed out, her state of mind defines reality itself. Her realm is a mad, ever-changing tangle of colors and shapes. Interestingly, Neil Gaiman has admitted that the character Delirium was influenced by the personality and appearance of musician Tori Amos. A physical similarity between the two is apparent, and Tori's free-wheeling, whimsical style is a trademark of her work.
